I find myself compelled to share my unforgettable journey through a month spent in Guatemala, a destination that stole my heart and deserves a prominent spot on every adventurer's bucket list.

Their customs and traditions echoed in every facet of daily life, from the colorful traditional attire to the rhythmic beats of indigenous music.

But it wasn't just the historical sites that stirred my soul; the country's astounding diversity of landscapes captivated me entirely. From the serene shores of Lake Atitlán, cradled by towering volcanoes, to the emerald hues of Semuc Champey's cascading pools, Guatemala's natural beauty proved to be an inexhaustible source of wonder and enchantment.

How To get to guatemala

Getting to Guatemala is relatively easy, and there are several transportation options available depending on your starting point and preferences. Here are the most common ways to reach Guatemala:

By Air: The fastest and most convenient way to get to Guatemala is by flying into La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, the country's capital. Numerous international airlines operate direct flights to Guatemala City from major cities in North and South America, as well as Europe. It's the primary gateway for international travelers.

By Land: If you are traveling from neighboring countries, you can enter Guatemala by land through various border crossings. Guatemala shares borders with Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. There are buses, shuttles, and private transport services available from neighboring countries into different cities within Guatemala.

By Sea: While not a common method, some cruise ships do make stops at Guatemalan ports on the Caribbean Sea, particularly in Puerto Barrios. If you're on a cruise and it includes a stop in Guatemala, you can explore the nearby attractions.

Overland Travel: If you're already in Central America, you can use the extensive bus network to travel between countries. Buses run regularly between major cities, and you can find international buses that connect Guatemala to neighboring countries.

As a favorite destination, it offers delicious food, aesthetic restaurants and cafes, and stunning views of volcanoes throughout the city. The warm and welcoming atmosphere, rich history, and vibrant cultural scene make Antigua an enchanting and unforgettable place to visit.


How to get there:

To get to Antigua from Guatemala City, you have several transportation options, and the most common and convenient way is by using a shuttle service. Here's how to do it:

Shuttle Service: Kan's Tours is a reputable shuttle company that offers transportation between Guatemala City and Antigua. You can easily book their shuttle service in advance online or at the airport upon arrival. The shuttle ride takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic, making it a quick and comfortable way to reach Antigua. Uber is also available.

Distance and Time: The distance between Guatemala City and Antigua is around 40 kilometers (approximately 25 miles). As mentioned earlier, the shuttle ride typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours, but this can vary based on traffic conditions. The route between the two cities offers picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes.

Hike A Volcano: Nestled among towering volcanoes, Antigua is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. Climbing one of the nearby volcanoes, like Pacaya or Acatenango (details on how to hike Acatenango further down), offers rewarding panoramic views and an unforgettable experience.

  • Hiking Acatenango and Vulcan de Fuego with Soy Tours has been an absolute bucket list experience for me. As an adventurous traveler, I had dreamt of witnessing the raw power of an active volcano up close, and this expedition surpassed all my expectations.

    The journey was undeniably challenging, pushing both my physical and mental limits. The steep inclines, rocky terrain, and high altitudes demanded determination and resilience. However, with every step I took, I knew that the reward awaiting me at the summit would make it all worthwhile.

    Beyond the physical challenges, the camaraderie among fellow hikers and the support from Soy Tours' knowledgeable guides made the journey even more rewarding.     Hiking Acatenango and Vulcan de Fuego with Soy Tours has undoubtedly been one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences of my life. It has not only fulfilled a long-held dream but also left an indelible mark on my soul. The memories of this extraordinary expedition will forever hold a special place in my heart, reminding me of the beauty and power that our planet has to offer. Here’s what you need to know before doing the hike;

    • HIKE DETAILS:

      • The hiking is demanding. You have to wear comfortable clothes and be sure to bring enough water, at least 3 liters of water.

        • On average, the total distance covered during the two-day Acatenango hike is around 12 to 15 kilometers (approximately 7.5 to 9.3 miles, not including the hike to Vulcan de Fuego which is additional 4 miles)

      • You’ll sleep at 3.756 meters above sea level and the temperature at the camping is around 5°C to – 10°C, so warm clothes are needed (don’t worry! Soy provides free of charge!)

      • Rain showers may occur, mainly from April to October

      • The camping is located at the Sunset side. It is a very exclusive spot

      • Soy offers a unique special covered kitchen at the camping, so you will be protected and enjoy the view while eat around a fire pit

      • Soy carries all the gear, dinner and breakfast to the camp. You only carry your clothes, water, lunch and snacks. (option to hire a porter to carry your personal things)

  • Immerse in Cultural Heritage: Antigua is steeped in Mayan and Spanish heritage, which is evident in its traditions, cuisine, and lively local markets. Exploring these aspects of the culture offers a deeper understanding of Guatemala's history and identity.

  • Explore Adventure Opportunities: The region surrounding Antigua offers ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. From volcano hikes to zip-lining, white-water rafting, and exploring nearby lakes, there is no shortage of adventure activities to enjoy.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) is particularly famous, attracting visitors from all over the world to witness the elaborate processions and festivities.

  • Shop Art and Handicrafts: Antigua is home to numerous art galleries and handicraft shops, offering unique and authentic souvenirs. You can find intricate textiles, ceramics, and artwork that showcase the talent of local artisans.

One of the highlights of my visit was undoubtedly the delectable food. From traditional Guatemalan dishes bursting with flavors to international fare, Antigua's culinary scene catered to every craving. I savored every bite at charming eateries, each with its unique ambiance and delightful gastronomic surprises. The aesthetic restaurants and cafes, often tucked away in hidden corners, added to the overall enchantment of the city's culinary experience. Sadly there wasn’t enough time to try them all!

Restaurants/Cafes to Eat At:

  1. Cafe Sky: Savor delicious international and Guatemalan cuisine while enjoying stunning rooftop views of Antigua and the surrounding volcanoes.

  2. Rincon Tipico: Relish traditional Guatemalan dishes in a cozy, family-run restaurant, offering friendly service and authentic flavors.

  3. La Fonda de la Calle Real: Delight in local and international dishes served in a charming courtyard setting, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed dining experience.

  4. Rainbow Cafe: Experience a unique dining experience with a mix of vegetarian, vegan, and international dishes, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

  5. Fernando's Kaffee: Satisfy your coffee cravings with a visit to this renowned cafe, known for its specialty coffee and delectable desserts.

  6. Caoba Farms Restaurant: An organic farm, store, and restaurant. Enjoy the “farm to table” experience, live music, and farm animals throughout acres of property.

  7. Arancini: Enjoy Italian street food and must try arancini’s.

  8. Cafe Condesa: An unbeatable place full of history, colonial atmosphere, a full menu and array of desserts.

  1. Ulew Cocktail Bar: My favorite cocktail bar in Antigua, Guatemala, Ulew Cocktail Bar is an 'enter through the phone booth' speakeasy with an atmosphere that feels more like a clandestine wine cave than a typical bar. Located beneath Antigua Brewing Company, the bar doesn't have a formal cocktail menu, but the skilled barkeeps are well-versed in the classics and have plenty of exciting and original recipes up their sleeves as well. An absolute must!

  2. Agua: Experience the unparalleled beauty of Antigua Guatemala and the majestic surrounding volcanoes from our rooftop terrace and cocktail bar. Savor your preferred beverage from our wide-ranging selection, featuring signature cocktails, timeless mixes, craft beers, and thoughtfully curated international wines. So good, I went back twice!

  3. Tartines: A great restaurant with even better view up on the terrace. Enjoy a french inspired meal, while overlooking ancient ruins. Cant beat the terrace here!

  4. Charleston:Fresh juices and carefully made syrups and shrubs go into every one of our unique cocktails.

  5. El Barrio: This place has it all! An array of bars and restaurants in one place. Spend a lively night mixed with locals and visitors from all over.

  • Selina Antigua: Enjoy a fun hostel atmosphere with a range of room options, communal spaces, and social events, perfect for budget travelers.

Taxis Boats “La Lancha”:

To fully explore the beauty of Lake Atitlán and its neighboring villages, hopping on a boat is a must. Boats act as a lifeline connecting the lakeside villages, and the process of catching a boat is an experience in itself. Simply head down to the village's dock, and within minutes, local boat operators will greet you and guide you to their small watercraft. Boats should cost between $5-15.






Mini Guide to Visiting Tikal

Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Here's a quick guide to make the most of your visit:

Getting There: Fly or drive to Flores, the nearest town to Tikal. From Flores, it's approximately an hour's drive to the Tikal National Park entrance.

Entrance Fees: Purchase your entrance ticket at the park's gate. Remember, it's advisable to carry cash in local currency (Quetzales) for entrance fees.

Guided Tours: Consider hiring a local guide to gain deeper insights into Tikal's history and significance. Their expertise enhances the experience.

Exploring the Ruins: Tikal boasts towering pyramids and impressive structures. Climb structures like Temple I and II for panoramic views of the ancient city and surrounding jungle.

Sunrise/Sunset Views: Sunrise or sunset visits offer a magical atmosphere. Many tours offer guided sunrise tours for an unforgettable experience.

Wear Comfortable Clothing: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Don't forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat.

Hydrate and Snacks: The climate can be humid, so bring water to stay hydrated. Snacks or a packed lunch are a good idea, as food options within the park can be limited.

Time Your Visit: Allocate at least half a day to explore the main sites, but a full day allows for a more leisurely experience.

Respect the Site: Tikal is a historical and cultural treasure. Respect the rules, avoid climbing restricted areas, and take care of the environment.

Transportation Back: Arrange for transportation back to Flores in advance or use the available shuttle services.
