The Modern City of Doha: Exploring Qatar During the FIFA World Cup 2022
Doha is an under-the-radar travel location that is about to be discovered by the rest of the world as the host of the 2022 World Cup. Visitors to this year’s festivities will be surrounded by futuristic geometric architecture, white sandy beaches, and a multitude of cultural activities in this underrated destination city.
Qatar’s capital city has a lot to offer and visitors should expect a unique experience. Read on to learn what we explored during our latest travels so you can start planning your next trip to Doha.
How Long to Stay?
The city center of Doha is rather compact and most of the major attractions can be seen in a day or two. Avoid the summer months as the temperatures are too high for much sightseeing.
We suggest staying at least 4 days for a more relaxed itinerary and a chance to explore the surrounding desert and islands.
Arriving to Doha Safely
The Hamad International Airport (DOH) is just three miles away from the city center and is well-connected.
All travelers must register with the official state-run COVID-19 tracing app called “Ehteraz” at least three days before arrival. This shows your vaccination and health status and it needs to be shown before entering any enclosed public space.
A negative PCR test taken within 48 hours or a negative Rapid Antigen test taken within 24 hours is necessary for admittance into Qatar. Proof of a COVID vaccine is not necessary.
Solo travelers (even solo women) will feel safe in the very low-crime country of Qatar. English is widely spoken and practicing basic travel safety will keep you feeling secure.
Things to Keep in Mind in Doha (What to Wear and How to Act)
Don’t pack your tube tops, tight dresses, sheer fabrics, or anything else that shows much skin to avoid unwanted attention. This also applies to male travelers, who will attract stares if they wear tank tops. Respect the modest dressing culture by covering shoulders and knees while avoiding any hints of cleavage.
If you are traveling with a partner, remember that public displays of affection are not normal in Qatar.
Doha is an Islamic city and as such, alcohol is not a part of the culture. Stadiums are serving beer for the World Cup, as well as some of the properly licensed restaurants frequented by tourists.
Even so, being intoxicated or carrying alcohol in public places is illegal. Avoid drinking too much by keeping track of your beers to steer clear of trouble. There’s so much to see and do that you won’t miss the booze!
