Visiting The United States

Tips to make the most of your time!

So you're going to visit The Land of the Free, Home of the brave?  THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!  Before visiting any country it’s best to do your research so you're up to date and full of knowledge prior to your arrival.  Here are some tips and etiquette you should be familiar with before your trip to America!

  1. There’s no surprise the most common language being spoken is going to be English.  In various locations you can be surrounded by a Spanish influence, amongst other languages as well.

  2. The delicious American food, the US excels at wildly innovative, gourmet cuisine! Common food ranges from burgers, steak, fish, pizza, sandwiches, salads, chicken tenders/nuggets and a whole lot of Fast Food spots. But no need to hit fast food spots with such a wide selection of deliciousness.

  3. Americans love their beer, cocktails, and coffee! Can’t forget about a healthier route including fresh juices, smoothies and protein shakes.

  4. Transportation doesn't come as easy and it does in Europe. Majority of the states you will need to get around by a vehicle. Of course there are public buses, Uber/Lyft and limited subways and train systems in certain states.

  5. Tipping IS most definitely expected but not mandatory, on majority of services! Other countries love Americans for this exact reason, so be sure to return to the favor to Americans who work for tips as their wages. A general 15-20% is common for good service provided.

  6. To dial out use +1 following the phone number. 911 is the emergency number.

  7. Americans ALL drive on the right side of the road

  8. Americans DON'T use the logical Metric System like everywhere else. Instead we use the Imperial system, so get ready for some pretty strange conversions of distance and temperatures.

  9. National parks are a must visit! Make the most of the spectacular national and state parks as they are some of the best in the world.

  10. There is a festival for everything; tacos, mac n’ cheese, tamales, etc. You name it, there’s a festival for it. Truly a good reason to get together with friends.

  11. Americans are relentlessly friendly, it's not fake. We over apologize and say “thank you” way too much. Other countries find it a bit weird, but we call it friendly.

  12. SPORTS ARE A BIG DEAL! From college sports to professional, there’s no shortage of athletic events to attend. Another good reason for groups to get together.

  13. DON'T TALK ABOUT POLITICS, it’ll save an argument.

  14. Laws are different in each state, and are taken seriously.

  15. The US is huge! Don't try to do too much, enjoy where you're at given the amount of time you have.

  16. Security at borders and airports ARE a big deal. Always give yourself more than enough time to make your flights at all airports.

  17. Don't assume you can smoke everywhere, more than likely you cannot. It's okay to ask establishments.

  18. Obey all traffic signs and law. Law enforcement in the US is very strict.

  19. Haggling is not much of a thing, the price displayed is generally pretty firm. Unless you're at a swap meet, that’s a different story.
